SHANGHAI & TREATY PORT LITERATURE

SHANGHAI LARGE DRAGONS by Dr. Wei-Liang Chow, translation by Fortune Wang. HB, 182 pp. Collectors of the "Large Dragons" of the first issue of Shanghai Local Post may be aware of the existence of a revised edition by the late Dr. Wei-Liang Chow and edited by L. Kullman entitled "Shanghai Large Dragons: The Issue of the Shanghai Local Post".  This invaluable book, a must for all keen students of China philately, is the extended work of the late  Mr. Lyon Livingston. For a lot of specialized collectors in this area, this  proves to be an obstacle if they are not well versed in English. This translation reproduces the original work and printing varieties, and catalogue numbers have been assigned to all. There is also a Michel and Yvert cross-reference which helps collectors to identify their stamps easily. The book ends with a section reproducing the complete content of Livingston's long out-of-print 1971 edition of "The Shanghai Postal System" in English, which includes the Treaty Ports (Amoy-Wuhu). Limited Quantity Available $40.00

Postal Stationery of Shanghai & Treaty Ports by Stanley Kruger, Donald Alexander. Published 1999 by the China Stamp Society. Hardbound with bright red binding and gold lettering, 66 pages. Authoritative treatment with enlarged illustrations that greatly expand the Han #s with new CSS#s. Every variety is clearly described with most illustrated. A wonderful book. Limited Edition $35.00

CHINA 1878-1949 SCOTT/MA/CHAN CATALOG CORRELATION INCLUDING JAPANESE OCCUPATION OF CHINA, SHANGHAI-TREATY PORTS, AND MANCHUKUO by Ralph Weil with Michael Rogers. 2006, second edition, SB. At last, a China catalogue number correlation which helps every collector who uses Scott, Ma or Chan catalogues.  Its three sections offer a Scott/Ma/Chan correlation; a Chan/Scott/Ma correlation; and a Ma/Scott/Chan Correlation.  While the sequences which Scott, Ma, and Chan follow in organizing their material are logical, each uses different criteria. Thus, matching Scott, Ma, and Chan numbers can be most time-consuming. Our catalogue correlation is effort-free and most helpful; we use it every time we work on China! $20.00

General China Literature:

Asian Philately and the Special List.  J. Millard Williams published a regular newsletter from 1971 to 1991. This started off as “The Special List” as it was mainly a listing of new and special material not listed on his yearly “Master Lists”. As this progressed, this publication began to include short articles offering information on discoveries made in new material being acquired. Readers started contributing their knowledge of what they had in their collections and this newsletter grew into a journal. In 1977, the format changed after Special List #51 and the new booklet format became known as “Asian Philately” starting with whole number 52 (AP Vol 1 No 1). By that time, research articles were making up at least 50% of the text of each issue. In the fourteen years of regular publication that followed, dozens of articles and serious research studies on Chinese stamps and postal history were written by the author and contributors and published in this newsletter. Many of these articles, including those covering subjects such as the HK Martyrs and the Great Wall Airmails are almost book length in scope. Other subjects included the New Peking Prints, marginal markings found on Japanese Occupation stamps, the NE China gate series, third Dr Sun series, 3 and 7 cent surcharges and money orders plus Manchurian postal history. Some of these articles have been republished overseas. There are also articles updating the many Kerr and Williams books. This newsletter has won international literature awards. It is absolutely loaded with pertinent, concise, interesting information for the Chinese collector. Despite the name “Asian”, the content is 99% Chinese. The unbound set realized over £250 in an English  auction!  $250.00
